Following updated statutory guidance from the Department for Education (Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026), all schools are now legally required to operate as mobile phone-free environments by default throughout the entire school day.
To comply with this national statutory requirement, our school policy has been updated:
Storage: If students choose to bring a mobile phone to school (for example, for their journey to and from school), it must be switched off and kept inside their school bag at all times
while on school grounds. Phones must not be kept in blazer or trouser pockets. This will be explained to students to the start of term.
Enforcement: If a phone is seen or heard at any point during the school day—including during lessons, break-times, lunchtimes, or transitions between classes—it will be confiscated
immediately by staff in line with our behaviour policy. This has been our policy for many years.
Communication: If you need to reach your child urgently during the day, or if they need to contact home, this must continue to be handled through the main school office. Please do not
contact your child directly or encourage them to contact you directly via their mobile device as it could lead to the device being confiscated.
This change is driven by national statutory guidance to ensure a calm, safe, and focused environment for learning across all schools. We appreciate your support in discussing this rule with your child and helping us uphold these standards.
If your child requires access to a phone for exceptional medical or individual support reasons, please contact the school office so we can formally discuss any required reasonable adjustments.
