Intent of the PE Curriculum
Our intent within the Physical Education Department at The Community College is to offer equal opportunities to students of all abilities to participate, succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. Our mission is to help all students find enjoyment through physical activity and we aim inspire them to strive to be the best they can be.
We aim to promote a learning environment where students are not afraid to make mistakes and recognise that resilience and perseverance are the key to success. Our mission is also to educate students about the physical and mental health benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle with the hope that students will continue to engage in physical activity throughout their lives. In addition, through our broad and balanced curriculum, we aim to embed the important values of fairness and respect.
Implementation of the PE Curriculum
All students at the Community College have the opportunity to experience a wide range of different sports and physical activities, both during curriculum time and through the diverse range of extra-curricular opportunities available. Lessons and clubs are delivered by PE staff, who themselves, have experience as professional and semi-professional athletes.
The programme of study at KS3 allows students to build on and embed the physical skills learned in key stages 1 and 2, and become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques. Students are taught how to use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents in direct competition through team and individual games. In addition, KS3 students are also taught elements of the theoretical component of the GCSE curriculum to aid the transition from KS3 PE to the challenging GCSE PE course.
Due to the extensive benefits of physical activity, PE is a compulsory subject throughout KS3 and KS4, so students in year 10 and 11 continue to study PE, regardless of whether or not they have chosen to study it at GCSE level.
In practical lessons, students are physically active for sustained periods of time and we encourage our students to be self-critical and reflective learners. In addition, every student is provided with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills; with year 9 students being responsible for leading activities in Primary School Sports Festivals and sports leaders and captains responsible for organising teams for inter-house competitions.
GCSE PE is delivered in line with the AQA specification and students are assessed on their practical performance in three sports and coursework as well as their performance in two written exams at the end of year 11.
At the Community College, participation in extra-curricular sport is strongly encouraged and also rewarded and celebrated. We have developed strong links with local sports clubs and students also have the opportunity to meet inspirational sports people. We also utilise local sports coaches and volunteers to support school sport and physical activity delivery.

Impact of the PE Curriculum
The Community College has recently achieved the Gold School Games Mark award for our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport in 2018/19. This success can be attributed to the high numbers of students regularly participating in the wide programme of extra-curricular sports of offer and representing the school in fixtures. The extensive opportunities we offer for students to develop their leadership skills has also contributed to us achieving this award.
Results at GCSE level are consistently strong for this subject, and we consistently achieve results that are above the National Average.
Despite being a small school, The Community College experiences regular success in sporting competitions against other schools. Physical Education is a very popular subject; enjoyment levels are high and behaviour is consistently good. The amount of students opting to study GCSE PE in Year 10 and 11 is also very high and many students go on to study Physical Education at A-Level and beyond.
