Round and About Walk Maps and Guides May 20th to 2nd June 2024

CCBC Friends are working with Jean Shirley to organise and run the annual Round & About Walks.

The whole Ramble starts and ends at the Church Barn, Church Lane, Bishop’s Castle, SY9 5FD. It is described below against the 7 maps provided. The Scramble takes you, via hills and valleys, through the first four maps (13 miles). The Amble, which follows the last three maps (10 miles), is a bit more gentle. We indicate the distance and ascent covered by each map, to help in your planning.

It’s all about enjoying the walk, taking in the scenery and raising funds for Blood Cancer UK and The Community College Bishop’s Castle.

The format of the walk changed in 2021 due to restrictions caused by the Covid19 pandemic and has proved to be very popular. This more flexible format enables you to access the walk over a two week period in May so that you can cover as much or as little as you choose over your preferred timescale.

You will be provided with detailed maps with full directions in roughly 3-mile sections to to download. The routes will be marked thoroughly with arrows during the period that the walk runs, and volunteers take turns to walk the entire route every other day from May 20 – June 2, checking that arrows haven’t been blown away or eaten by passing cows. Even inexperienced walkers can follow the route with confidence

“the best marked route, by far, we have ever been on”.

Enter by clicking through on the entry type of your choice from this page. After that, you decide when to walk between May 20 – June 2, on which route or routes and with whom.

You provide your own refreshments and, most importantly, are responsible for your own safety.

Our Aims:

Our first aim is for you to enjoy the walking and the scenery. Our second aim is to support our chosen national and local charities, our target for this is £5,000.

Blood Cancer UK

In the battle to beat blood cancer, research and patient knowledge is vital:

  • £10 buys vital information booklet for 10 people newly diagnosed with blood cancer.
  • £100 pays a researcher to analyse 120 blood cell sample – any of which could hold the key to possible new treatments.
  • £1,000 funds a research nurse for three days supporting patients testing new treatments.

Visit the Blood Cancer UK site for more details.

Background

Jean Shirley is a very active member of the Bishop’s Castle community. Amongst other things she is a Trustee at the SpArC and has been a governor of The Community College for more than 10 years. She has been organising the Round and About Walks for more than a decade now to fundraise for blood cancer research because both her mother and husband died of leukaemia.

(Dr) Dave Shirley died 12 years ago. Not long before, his consultant asked why he had chosen to be a scientist not a medic. His answer – what’s the point of being a medic if there is no cure? – inspired Jean to do what she could to raise money to find that cure.

When Marta, Jean’s mother, died 45 years ago, only one of every ten children diagnosed with leukaemia survived. Now it’s eight out of ten. Moreover, six out of ten people of all ages survive blood cancer for at least ten years. Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, however, is proving a tough nut to crack in older people.

In 2023 a total of £3,246 was raised.
