I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and clarify a few expectations regarding PE lessons. I have had the pleasure to work at The Community College since September and have been delighted to see how students approach their PE lessons with enthusiasm and commitment. From January I will be moving to the role of Subject Lead of PE. Therefore, I thought it important to clarify a few of our expectations moving forward.

Although the majority of the students’ kit is excellent, sadly during most lessons anywhere from 1-5 students may have forgotten kit as a whole or specific items. It is our policy to provide kit when we can, but obviously in doing so this causes disruption to the start of the lesson and impacts upon the learning of all students. For this half term we’ve recorded these incidents on Go4Schools but it has not had much effect. In order to reduce this disruption, from January 2023 students without a full kit will now receive a breaktime detention on the following Monday or Wednesday, in the school hall. Should a student miss this detention it will be reallocated on one occasion before moving to an afterschool detention.

Of course, there will be times when there may be genuine kit issues, for example waiting on the supplier or lost kit. It is not our intention to sanction such occasions but we do ask that students supply us with a note from yourselves to explain the situation in order to avoid any detention.

I would also like to take this opportunity to advise students to bring additional clothing during the cold weather. Students can wear plain coloured tops underneath their PE top that does not have a zip or hood. Students are also permitted to wear The Community College jogging bottoms, if these are unavailable plain black bottoms without logos are permitted. The school guidelines currently permit a plain black hood over the top of the PE kit. We are currently reviewing this as such tops carry an additional health and safety risk in some activities.

Finally, I would like to thank you for your support and encourage you to contact me if you’ve any further queries via email to Roberts.A@CCBCShropshire.com. I hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas and a Happy New Year.
